Thunder City Lightnings

Postby Ray C » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:55 pm

Being a (new boy) to the forum I'm viewing other aviation sites, and In addition to Vulcan my other aircraft love is the lightning. Thunder City has or did have 3 airworthy lightnings + Hunters & I think a buccaneer .

Did I read the operation was shut down with the aircraft all to be sold ? If my lottery no's came up I'd have the 2 seater, even if it can't fly in uk airspace.

So where are these aircraft now ? Still in south Africa ?

I read a great quote in (the lightning boys) book, " if you want a lightning, just buy an acre of land in Lincolnshire & wait"

Yes Thunder City did stop operations after the Lightning accident in Now 2009 or was it '10?. There was an auction last November in which I believe the a/c weren't sold and another last April. Whether they sold then I have no idea but the Bucc was airborne again shortly before the second auction
In memory of a very dear friend - Mike Pearson

Very fond memories of Robbie Gilvary - DTs 1st Vulcan Captain who taught DT all he knew.

I believe the Bucc is still flying, it displayed at an airshow a few months ago, which is good!
Fly fast jets and/or C130s over my house please, I'm bored!

Eff know's if it's true or not!!

I wonder if that's because they haven't sold! :-o

More as scrap than a viable aircraft, that's for sure!

I would say the best chance of seeing a Lightning back in the air is the T5 under rebuild in America, the 3 Thunder city ones have been sitting for sometime without any anti det runs as far as I know.
