Some of you may be aware, four landed at Farnborough this afternoon.
As usual this year, the sun wasn't present.

Got a picture, somewhere, of one of those, with its tail on, going in the back of a Guppy.

Here it is:

That's my NASA mate, Stuart in the picture

All four landed yesterday. Two are due to arrive Fairford Wednesday.

Nice shot Gaz. They are smaller then I was expecting.

I think there are actually two more in the
pipeline that are somewhat larger.....

It took so looooooong to get the Osprey
right, now they can move-on to the bigger
ones.....

One is a FOUR ROTOR!!!!!!!!!

(...I think...)

Here's a drawing and a description:::::::::::::::

Image

The conceptual design is for a large tandem wing aircraft with V-22 type engines and 50-foot rotors at each of the four wing tips. The C-130-size fuselage would have a 747-inch-long cargo bay with a rear loading ramp that could carry 110 paratroopers or 150 standard-seating passengers. In cargo configuration, it would accommodate eight 463L pallets.[9]

In addition to the baseline configuration, the Bell-Boeing team is including eight possible variants, or "excursion designs", including a sea-based variant. The design team is planning on payloads ranging from 16 to 26 tons and a range of 420 to 1000 nmi. The baseline version includes a fully retractable refueling probe and an interconnecting drive system for power redundancy.[9]

One of the design excursions explored by the team, dubbed the "Big Boy", would have 55-foot rotors and an 815-inch-long cargo bay, making it able to carry one additional 463L pallet, and accommodate a Stryker armored combat vehicle.[9]

Seeing as it would have 50 per cent commonality
with the Osprey, the "Big Boy" might not take
all that long to develop :D

Do you think it will be built? Looking at the USA's budget deficit and defence spending cuts. :-?
Does look a beast though.

Given all the extensive development it took
to get the Osprey up and flying, one would
hope making bigger aircraft of the same type,
especially with so many shared components,
would be a comparative walk in the park!

If they're looking to save resources, that just
might be how it could be justified :D

It would be good for YOU guys, too, seeing
as the engines and ancillaries are all RR :D
