The pilot became disorientated while in a turn in poor visibility. It struck power cables and crashed onto a railway line at Nienberg 30 minutes after take off from Detmold, West Germany on a flight to Verden. The pilot and passenger were injured. Crashed on 25/11/1963.

Ray I can't say specifically for 558 but I know crew wives did get flights in Vulcans on occasions, as for crewing them the answer is no, the RAF didn't allow female pilots until '89 and she was decommissioned in '93.

1, No the probe doesnt work, it remains for the pilots to sight down when taxying, I believe (and await to be corrected) that there was a Concession with the CAA During the restoration for it to be kept.. the CAA said if its fitted it has to work.

If a part is fitted and connected as it would have been normally connected in the aircraft's normal working life, then it has to work. If you get to have a shufti into the nosewheel bay, the NBS boxes and the TACAN T/R are still fitted but not wired up. Similarly, there are more NBS boxes fitted in the cockpit and sundry heavy bits such as the Omega receiver.
After the restoration, with so much kit and wiring having been removed, the C of G was well aft, so we installed these bits purely as ballast to bring it back into line (as well as a big chunk of metal in the radome, where the H2S scanner used to be).

The fuelling probe is not connected either, therefore it doesn't work.
