That's what I thought it was too, didn't realise it was visible from out side, I thought it was hidden somewhere.


One thing I will say, and I'm glad to say it, all these memorials are very well looked after (with the exception of the bird poo ), there's no graffiti or anything especially when you consider that at Goxhill the pil box thing (I don't know what it actually is) is only a few yards up the road from the memorial and it's covered in graffiti and full of rubbish.

The one that gave me a lump in the throat was this one.



Sadly I didn't get a close up, but it lists the names of Six 550 Squadron veterans who have passed away since their last reunion

Hazzer: It is a very sorry story.

It is also ironic that the most Iconic aircraft of the 60s/70s/ and 80s was the subject of so many restoration dreams but which eventually became such a nightmare for those who had invested their time and money into trying to preserve it. Apart from the LPG at Brunty however who never had any serious aspirations of trying to get theirs flying.


Edit: Helen - It is good, indeed it is very good, that young people such as yourself still take an active interest in our military aviation heritage and I don't mean to sound patronising

Of course living in Bomber County - near to fighter town - must help.

Is she still on her island of concrete in the field (didn't 'they' dig up the hard standing/taxi way round her?).

Helen where is the memorial to be found in the first shot at Waltham? - I was there 18 mths ago and didn't see but it looks easily accessible.

Go North up the A16 towards the village of Waltham, there is a little layby/dead end road on the left (airfield side) just past some traffic lights and a junction into Holton le Clay, near some trees. It's tucked away at the end of the road/layby.
The hangar (if that's what it is) is in the same place up a farm (peri?) track.

Helen - be very careful with Binbrook - the day after I visited there I ended up with a Lightning Lincolnshire is a truly superb County, one which I will be visiting time and time again due to the Bomber Command connection. It had a very different feeling to the one at Goxhill. I didn't like that one at all I can't even describe it. This one was ok though, not as badly graffitied and not as much rubbish, a lot of rubble though which is why I didn't go any further in.
It was a tight fit though not much room in the door way.

Helen. Those first 2 images could be of storage (bomb)? bunkers. Were they at the north end of the old base?

Yes they were and I think you're right, I though it said in my book that the area was used for bomb storage, but if it did I can't find it so I must have read it somewhere else.

Also I was looking at my North Witham photos from this summer and the foundations I found there were pretty good matches for the buildeings in Woodhall, and I definitely know that they were bomb storage as I have a copy of the origianl site plan.

I remember reading the same but also can't remember where Just remember that the bomb stores were to the north and built within the tree's.

Helen if you go to Metheringham Open Weekend next year they do free airfield tours by coach not only do you see what you have taken but you get to go around the back of Eclipse Farm to a part that isn't open to the public normally.
