Helicopter down in London?

Postby Mayfly » Wed Jan 16, 2013 9:47 am

According to the news it looks like a helicopter has struck a crane employed on a new building site and has come down near Vauxhall Brigde... :(

It has been described as foggy and I am assuming it's civvy.

Sean Maffett has said on BBC Breakfast he believes it's an Augusta A109 and weather at the time was described by Gatwick as freezing fog.

Point to note!

I believe the Mets own helicopter was grounded at the time due to the poor weather!

Pilot being named as Captain Pete Barnes.

Sean (or Sam as the man on BBC news 24 kept calling him) did a great job of trying to explain what MIGHT have happened, and put the man in his place a couple of times.

If they don't have at least 1000' to the cloud base they won't fly. Tall structures in Londinium nowadays.

According to the Aviation Safety Network report it is unclear whether the pilot had asked for a divert due to adverse weather conditions or for technical reasons.

According to a poster on PRUNE, Battersea heliport issued a statement saying it was requested as a weather divert. The only conclusive confirmation would be the Heathrow ATC records.

STATEMENT FROM LONDON HELIPORT ON VAUXHALL HELICOPTER CRASH
Just before 8am today a helicopter crashed in central London close to Vauxhall Bridge.
The helicopter involved in the accident was not destined in to the London Heliport.
However, we received a request from Heathrow air traffic control to accept the helicopter, which requested to be diverted due to bad weather.
Earlier in the helicopter's journey the pilot had been receiving an air traffic control service from NATS. The heliport never gained contact with the helicopter.
The Heliport will be closed for the rest of the day
Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all of those involved in this tragic accident
