They're the thermocouples for measuring jet pipe temperature......and as any sooty will tell you they hurt like hell if you put your knee down on one as you're backing out of the jet pipe after doing a visual of the hot end of the engine! ;)

Good thing Spitfire's otherwise occupied with

Oh, and nice pics -- esp. the groovy lines :)

On 655, which obviously has 300 series propelling nozzles, there is a nice gap between the thermocouples at the bottom for the sooty to crawl through, but ONLY on nos 2 and 3 engines. On nos 1 and 4, because of the outward skew in the end of the jetpipe, the bottom thermocouple is near to bottom dead centre, and it hurts!!

I'm not sure if 558 is the same, because the 200 series propelling nozzles are very different - I'm sure you've noticed that the nozzles and end caps are somewhat longer on 558 than on 655.
Sooty

One Olympus 301 has twice the power of a complete F1 starting grid.
XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

Think it used to be the Loran (Long Range Aids to Navigation) antenna. Might still be an aerial of some sort, but probably just a useful rack now!

I somehow don't think Smiler or Oberon would be very happy if it was used a a chin up bar and we bent their nice straight aerial.

The aerial used to be the ADF "sense" aerial, but may have been used for the later Loran Fit - I would need to check the modification sheets back at Brunty.

It is there purely for aesthetic reasons now - not connected to anything.
