558 - Air Show Music

Postby Pujgnie » Sat Oct 03, 2009 10:54 pm

Who actually has control of this aspect ? Is it the venue organizers or the VTTS commentators choice ?

I - like most, abhor that 'Clannad' track being blasted out of the PA system as 558 does her stuff. She does NOT need background music. X( X( X( X(

If we vent our thoughts (to who-ever)... maybe next years displays will be 'music free'.

It's worth a try I suppose.

Sounds to ME like a case of:

"Well, everybody ELSE does it........"

I'd place a small wager on who's responsible...

I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong, but "Harry's Game" was played at 558's last display in '92. It's a sad song and a bit of a dirge for what is to be promoted as a triumphant return. If they have to play music what about something meaner, like "The Bitch is back" or "The Boys are Back inTown". I still prefer the sound of unaccompanied Olympoi though.

I HATE IT... X(

TBH - not only do I think its pointless in having music because half the time you can't hear it - the rest of the time it impacts on the display, and the commentary is just as bad, although I do realise they need to inform non 558 fans what she is about. If they want to use either if them they need to be perfectly timed.

I would think any choice of music is A/C operator led....but I will ask some questions of flight ops.

Well the EASY answer is to fit some massive loud speakers in the bomb bay and play our own tune, just place the microphone by the exhausts and ramp up the amplifier to 11. :ymapplause:

A healthy debate ,this.
Music playing while 558/any aircraft displays is deplorable ,they don't need anything at all .Having said that I'm ready to duck with the next bit ,could it be that Health & safty thing rearing it's ugly head .They have to play music to cut down the jet noise to protect childrens heareing as well as others.
I watched the vids of 558 at Leuchars with the sound of simply put i could not hear the note changes from the aircraft because of that awful music comming from the PA.Now that totaly spoiled her display for me.

Well, Y'know, if music is required by Law or
something, I'd go for the Stones with "Start
Me Up"! Not only the sound of it, but the
LYRICS are very apropos....

I also think TVOC's commentator -- the usual
one -- is the best of the lot! What's his name?
He bought a batch of SM and Magsie's Books
for his grandkids and mentioned it in his spiel.....

Agree, although I would add that when she is at some distance away - it does add a little bit of atmosphere..... but should be immediately faded out when those engines are in earshot ;)

It's Sean Maffett D4th that does the commentary.

Agreed about when she is far away Wedgy, thats what I meant when I said it needs to be perfectly timed

Detest music accompanying '558! I've heard two tracks used this year - the standard Clannad dirge and Holst's Mars - Bringer of War. The latter was better, but still unnecessary IMO. The "...this is the bomber controller: scramble, scramble, scramble..." raised its head again on at least one occasion this year - again completely out of time with '558's take-off roll... X(

I thought the music was part of Sean Maffett's set-up, but could be wrong.

Who was the chap that commentated at lots of airshows years ago - Roger someone, I think? Big moustache.

i despise background music full-stop ~x(

we seem t have it thrust upon us all the time these days, especially TV programmes. we are, however, nowhere NEAR as bad as some of the Murkin TV programmes - i recall the US version of "The Apprentice" having music throughout the programme, NON STOP!!! it was so distracting, i gave up watching the programme completely.

558 needs no music at all - even when she's away n the distance. what's wrong with a little bit of SILENCE once in a while?

The only time music should be played during displays is to drown out the noise of the Team Guinot Stearmen and to drown out that complete tit Brendon Whatsisface, They come joint first in the most annoying noise competition.

Going back to the main subject (interrupt at will) was Clannad not the main music that 558 flew to during most of Her displays during the late 80's early 90's? This was the conversation my Father and Myself were having at Bournemouth this year.

I must admit "that music" did assist me getting rather emotional at RIAT when I saw her for the first time since 91' as it instantly reminded me of some of my best childhood memories :ymdaydream: .

However, I too agree that 558 needs no music as imho She is music to the ears alone :) .
