Bit random......Road names (avaition related)

Postby Stigish » Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:47 pm

Unfortunately I have a bit too much time on my hands due to some Flu related illness (oink, oink ;) ) so I thought I'd start a bit of an unusual topic on Road Names (shoot me down if this gets too boring!), aviation related of course :)
Were I live has a very strong connection with aviation (a long time ago unfortunately), but they did name alot of roads after some rater Iconic Aircraft:
Vulcan Way
Dakota Close,
Halifax Way,
De Haviland Way,
Valiant Way,
Swordfish Drive,
Lancaster Close,
Hunter Drive,
Pipers Way (?),
Blemheim Drive,
Comet Way,
Catalina Close,
Delta Close,
Airspeed way, and of course they are all branching from........
Airfield way.
All these roads were built on the former RAF Christchurch airbase which is quite obviously no longer in existance :(( :(( :(( :(( .

In a similar vain, we had a bar in Belize with a crashed Cessna placed into the outside wall!

It was called the PLOUGH INN!

Got Avro Road, Vickers Way, Comet Way and Aviation Way near Southend Airport, and there is loads round where RAF Hornchurch used to be, named after various types and old Fighter command airfields.

Birchwood estate in Lincoln is built over RAF Skelingthorpe and a lot of the roads are air bases if that counts ;) :D

Thanks Phill,

I knew I could rely on you to provide some more of your 'local' knowledge :) .

Nearly forgot Sea Vixen trading estate. Any ideas what happened to the one that used to be sat on the corner of the now PC World car park as you enter said estate?

We have Lancaster Way in Ely.
It is the main road through a small industrial area and is what used to be the runway of RAF Witchford I believe.

Hi Puguine,

Any idea why that estate in Poole has all those RAF inspired names.

It's just down the road from the test centre so I've been up and down it hundreds of times and often wondered.

I even looked up a set of old maps to see if it was the site of an old airfield but that seemed to be further away from the town.

Hope your nipper liked the photo.
