Nimrod MR1 203 Sqd RAF Luqa markings

Postby Old Rigger » Sun Nov 15, 2009 9:25 pm

Thought I would have a change of subject, I have started putting on some off the decals and next time I am going to research the model first to make sure it is manufactured correctly. Also I will look at painting before assy.

SM, thanks and next is a Typhoon, followed by a Chinook, then a Concorde. I am trying to keep it to aircraft types I have worked on, the only exception is concorde, I might even do another Tornado ZA614 that belonged to Tornado Aircraft Servicing Flight (TASF) raf Honington, we were the only modern second line maintenance organisation with our own serviceable aircraft to play with.

Stigish, again thanks for comment, since my daughters left I was permitted to turn the smaller bedroon into a study, so it has all my pictures, models, ornaments that primarily cover my service life and interests, it is nice to sit and have them remind me of a time of my past and some of my support of XH558.

We were the first Tornado minor team set up and for the ground crew and air test crew they decided that we would use it to testing some of the new electronic test sets and practice diagnosing snags when the aircrew broke it getting up to speed to be able to carry out air tests for us.

Even more off topic, if you are interested, the Tornado Weapons Conversion Unit (TWCU) and 9 Sqd both borrowed it, at seperate times, and both removed our decal on the fin and put there own on, this is technically illegal and also upset the 'management' the aircraft is now up at RAF Lossiemouth on 617 Sqd.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments.

XPL that is what the display case is for, she broke my Chinook model,Tornado model both beyond recovery, broke the probe off one of the die cast Vulcans had to make a new one, broke the Falklands Slate model that the guys did for me and the Nimrod was going to be hung from the ceiling where she cannot reach it. But she has promised to leave the cleaning to me now, it is wether I trust her now :p .

Sorry Mackrick, but the Nimrod is the only home made model, the others are all die cast models consisting of 4 Vulcans, one Chinook and one Tornado GR4, the other Vulcan is a wooden model.

I love the Nimrod, is it the Airfix 1/72nd model? I have one still in it's box awaiting it's turn on the construction line but there are 3 models in front of it;
4mm/foot scale 71000 Duke of Gloucester
1/18th scale Jaguar XKR (2003 m y)
1/72nd Airfix Concorde
then the Nimrod can take up residence on the dining room table :)

[quick thought, if you want to keep up your rule of "aircraft i've worked on" how about offering your services to one of the places that have a Concorde for the day, then you'll have 'technically' worked on her] ;)

Hi Roy898, it is indeed that airfix one, I have recently purchased some eduard blanks, external panelling and 1/72nd remove before flight tags, so I have been pottering about with that. In fairness I have been to busy to do my Sentry and complete the Nimrod & Typhoon models.

As to ones I have worked on, technically I could add a few more from training and Cranwell would also include Chipmunk and I have been thinking about helping at Newark, but at the moment family commitments make that not yet feasable. Hope your model making goes well and there are a lot of after market add ons to make them look more realistic, if you have the skill and patience working with little tiny bits of metal ;), which unfortunately I don't yet :(

the skill and patience of working with tiny bits of metal is no problem what with building 00 scale locomotive kits which usually have many small brass and whitemetal components, it's finding the time to sit and build them at the moment :(

What a wonderful model, I was Luqa until the end of 203, in ASF. However I note with more interest on your wall a plaque for 213 Raf Halton, I am a rigger & was also 213!
