New Model Shop In Southampton opening 5/12

Postby 350wedge » Fri Dec 04, 2009 8:47 pm

For anyone living in Southampton or in the surrounding area, there is a new 'Model Zone' shop opening up in Southampton town centre tomorrow morning. Its between the high street entrance to West Quays and 'The Mall' shopping centre's.

I'll be down there first thing to see whats its like. They have been stocking up most of the week and there looks like some good stuff in there!! Seems to be plenty of r/c car's/heli's towards the front of the shop and loads of glass cabinets with model cars. Havent seen whats towards the back of the shop yet !!

MODEL ZONE :-o ......... Image Image Image

Hell .... Model Zone isn't a 'model shop' - admitted its full of models - but mostly shiney pre-made or ready to go stuff that satisifies the urges of the modern world to do 'modelling' of any kind with the least possible personal input or effort :ymdevil:
Granted there are some Airfix kits and the odd Meccanno set - but mostly it's big boxes with stuff you take out and use from the box .... where's the fun in that - and more to the point how do you learn anything ~x(

THIS is a REAL model shop .......

and THIS ......

Model Zone is a sorry excuse for a model shop and a sad indictment of todays culture of 'I want it NOW' :(

I dont particularly agree with all of that. Whilst its true that there are many more 'mass market' ready made items on sale, the new Southampton store stocks an awful lot of 'proper' model making supplies.

The selection of platic models is quite simply the largest selection I've seen in a shop in a VERY long time. Not just aircraft but miltary, cars and ships. There were large stocks of Airfix, Tamiya, Revell and Hasegawa. Then all the obligatory paint ranges from Humbrol, Tamiya and Revell, plus accessories too

We have a Hobby Stores shop in town as well and for plastic type modelling the Model Zone shop is leagues ahead. Of course you can get more specialist things at Hobby Store so its swings and roundabouts. Even so the vast majority of Hobby Store stock these days is RTF or ARTF, or ready to run RC cars. The good old days of building a Tamiya kit or other from scratch is passing by. I was impressed though that Model Zone were stocking in shop the big Tamiya 1/16 scale RC Tank Kits. Now that is what I really want to have a go at!!

Ooooh, I'm off to southampton on Thursday to see my Sister as she has just had her baby. Which means I'll be popping into the town centre to by my new Niece a prezzie..............Do you think she'd like a 1/72 scale airfix Vulcan? :p
Is it on the old Marlands shopping centre side or the East Street side of West Quay?

Out of interest does anyone know if Beatties still exists in southampton? I need some spares for my RC Richard Burns Scooby.

Yes they have 1/72 Vulcans in stock ;)

Beatties as far as I know is long gone. Your best option is to try the Hobby Store shop. Its not located in the main shopping area though. You have to walk past the archway at bottom end of town then keep going and take the second turning on the left just after a building thats being renovated and has scaffolding outside (cant miss it, boarding is painted purple!!). If you go down there, straight over a set of crossroads you'll see the shop on the right.

I'll prob be in Model Zone on my way home from work. I'm really tempted by a lovely model Aston Martin DBR9 Racecar in there !!!

Slightly diverting from Southampton...

Anyone visiting Bournemouth/Poole - may be interested in a model shop called 'Plastic Past Times'. It is floor to ceiling stacked with models of every inclination. The shelves are ram packed full of nostalgia from the Golden Hind to the F22 Raptor ;)

One down side... the owner is a right grouchy old so and so, who lurks in a room at the back of the shop (like an ogre). His wife does virtually everything in the shop - and is very helpful. He was supposed to be selling up and retiring 10 years ago (due to lack of there being any REAL model makers anymore)... he's still going !!
Look Mummy.. there's an aeroplane up in the sky.....
