40 Years of Naval Sea Kings

As we have RNAS Culdrose the local radio BBC Radio Cornwall (natty title eh ) is wittering about the Seaking having been in service 40 years.

I don't know where that leaves RAF Seakings - or for that matter the S61D that flies to the Scilly Islands every day as that is basically a civilian Seaking

When I worked at the Vickers shipyard in Barrow in 1970, the navy lads had car window stickers reading -

SeaKing here, SeaKing there,
Navy choppers everywhere.

Just about sums up the matelot mentality

Spitters - the Scilly Islands' chopper is Sikorsky built, not Westland

i flew on it a few years back - went to see Mousehole's Christmas lights from the air. the tickets were only about £30 each - well worth it!

Ok hair splitter - but it's the same basic machine - Westland just build them under license

The S-61 was the winner of a 1957 United States Navy development contract for an amphibious antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopter capable of detecting and attacking submarines combining the Hunter-Killer missions in one aircraft. Sikorsky built more than 1100 S-61s, and this excellent machine was also built with license by Westland in UK, Agusta in Italy and by Mitsubishi in Japan.
