In their usual fashion, PPRuNe have rapidly moved the story from News to Spectators Balcony, on the basis that the aircraft was never in any real trouble and it is all just hysterical newspaper reporting.

It seems to me that from the passengers point of view, a decompression sufficient to drop the oxygen masks followed by a rapid descent of 26,000 feet is going to get your attention and should be considered an incident.

The newspapers and other media may be overdoing it with words like "plummet" and "suddenly dropped", but the event is certainly worth reporting.

XM655 has four of them, all serviceable.

I was on a flight back from Florida, a few years ago. The aircraft had landed and was taxiing to its stand. For some reason, the O2 masks deployed. Even though we were on the ground, some people panicked.

With things like this the media will always go overboard with words like "plummet" and "dropped out of the sky" as it gets hits.

The BBC news website is unfortunately getting more and more like this with ridiculous headlines that are terribly misleading.

Either way, I felt it was worth reporting as there was a fault (some say 2 faults) with the air conditioning unit which could I suppose have led to the type being grounded for investigation. That is personally why I thought it was news worthy and a descent from 26,000ft to 10,000ft is a big "drop" and despite being in a controlled manner I am sure it was quite a scary experience.

It is newsworthy.

The only reason I made fun of it (Now moderated, long story, water under the bridge), is because I make fun of everything and will continue to do so ;)
