My first encounter with the Goodyear airship was as a child in the early '80s. It flew over our house on it's way to Leicester Airport / Stoughton Aerodrome, where it was based for the duration of The Pope's visit to the UK. To a child's mind, it seemed to be around for ages, but it was probably only a week or so. You could go the the airfield to view it, and they even had a souvenir stall, in fact we had an inflatable airship hanging from the bedroom ceiling for a while!
A few years back, I got home to find the airship floating around above my house, seemingly with the engines not running. Quite a eerie sight! Then after a while, the engines fired up and off it went.
Grumpy old man in training!
